A film centered around the iconic Muppet is in early development, a source confirmed with The Hollywood Reporter. Jennifer Lawrence revealed that she and Emma Stone are producing the project during an appearance on the Las Culturistas podcast.

I dont know if I can announce this, but Im just gonna, she said in the episode, continuing, Emma Stone and I are producing a Miss Piggy movie, and Cole [Escola] is writing it. Lawrence further clarified that the Oh, Mary! star is slated to pen the screenplay for the project.

Later on Wednesday, during an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Lawrence offered more details about how the idea for the film came to be.

During lockdown, one of my good friends whos not in the industry was like it was also kind of around cancel culture. It was like both things were kind of happening at once. We were all locked up in our rooms and naughty people were being locked up in prison Miss Piggy is a feminist icon. And she said, You know, it would be so funny if Miss Piggy got canceled,' she said.

Lawrence clarified, Now that is not the plot necessarily, but that their conversation got the wheels turning of like, wait, there hasnt actually been a feminist, Miss Piggy-starring movie.

When the actress-producer was also asked on Las Culturistas if she and Stone would be making an onscreen appearance in the untitled Miss Piggy movie, the Oscar winner responded, I think so. We have to.

The character of Miss Piggy made her debut in The Muppet Show in the 1970s, and her star power has continued to grow over the years. The longtime romantic interest of Kermit the Frog, the two have long served as the faces of The Muppets, who all share a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

The Muppets will next be seen in Seth Rogens Muppet Show revival for Disney+, where Sabrina Carpenter serves as a special star and executive producer.

Jim Henson created The Muppets in 1955, and their first TV appearance came in 1969 on Sesame Street. The franchise was purchased by The Walt Disney Company in 2004.

Lawrence has been doing press tied to the Friday premiere of Die My Love. While she didnt dish any details on the Miss Piggy project in conversation with THR, she did admit that shed never say never to taking part in a film franchise again.

I love doing franchises because its rare in movies that you work with the same group of people for years. That element is great. I dont want to say I never would but I have two young kids, so I cant imagine doing it now, she explained. I just need more freedom in my schedule. But not never.
