Its time for Matthew McConaughey and True Detective creator Nic Pizzolatto to collaborate again.
McConaughey is in talks to star in a movie centering on the detective character Mike Hammer for a project that has a script from Pizzolatto. Skydance has acquired rights to the Mike Hammer property, with the character having originated in a 1947 novel by author Mickey Spillane and continued after Spillanes death in books by Max Allan Collins.
Producers include Skydances David Ellison, Dana Goldberg and Don Granger, alongside Guymon Casady, Benjamin Forkner and Ken F. Levin. Collins is an executive producer, while Jane Spillane co-produces. Carin Sage oversees the film for Skydance. In the book series that kicked off with Spillanes I, the Jury, Mike Hammer is a private investigator who plays by his own rules and carries a torch for assistant Velda. Baby, Its Murder is billed as the final book in the series and was released this year.
McConaugheys next projects include the features The Rivals of Amziah King and The Lost Bus and the comedy series Brothers alongside Woody Harrelson.
Pizzolatto created the HBO anthology series True Detective, which launched its acclaimed first season in 2014 with a cast led by McConaughey, Harrelson and Michelle Monaghan. Pizzolatto worked on the scripts for such features as The Magnificent Seven and The Guilty and is the writer-director behind the forthcoming indie movie Easys Waltz that stars Monaghan, Vince Vaughn and Al Pacino.
McConaughey is represented by WME and Yorn Levine. Pizzolatto is repped by WME, Gillett Management and Eric Brooks of Goodman Genow.
Deadline was first to report on the project.
