SNL50: The Anniversary Specialtook home the Emmy for best variety special (live) on Sunday night, beating husband-and-wife duo Beyonc and Jay-Z in the category.
Beyonc was nominated for Beyonc Bowl, while Jay-Z was nominated for his executive producing stint on The Apple Music Super Bowl LIX Halftime Show Starring Kendrick Lamar. The Oscars and SNL50: The Homecoming Concert were also nominated in the category.
After Saturday Night Live alum Tina Fey presented the award, SNL creator and producer Lorne Michaels accepted the trophy, reminiscing on the first time he won an Emmy in 1975 (coincidentally, the same number thats in the title of his winning special). I was younger and I had a lot of dreams about what would happen in my life, and one of my dreams was that Id still be doing the same show for 50 years, Michaels said on stage, with Martin Short and Steve Martin watching him from the audience in awe.
I want to thank NBC and Comcast for their support. The show was two years in the planning and they said, we dont care what it costs, as long as its good,' he added. Maybe that didnt say that, maybe thats just the way I heard it. I also wanted want to thank the Academy for continuing to keep the word television in their name, as long as its in that, well keep showing up.
