Queen plays Live Aid, 1985

　　I wasn’t yet born when Live Aid took place, so in my mind it’s a sepia-toned example of music and idealism and the type of cultural unity we’ll never enjoy ever again (see also: Woodstock). But I did go see Bohemian Rhapsody last night—a record third movie in five days for me—and its portrayal of Queen’s performance at Live Aid made me immediately rush home to YouTube the real thing. My fave karaoke song is a Queen song

　　I haven’t seen the movie, but I will always revel in the opportunity to enjoy some Queen, karaoke or otherwise. Actually, my karaoke go-to is “Fat-Bottomed Girls,” number 4 on Billboard’s list of best Queen songs—behind the more anthemic “Bohemian Rhapsody,” “Under Pressure,” and “We Will Rock You.” In comparison, “FBG” is joyously dumb, hypnotically catchy, and never fails to sway the crowd. Brian May wrote it, giving his own guitar many stellar rocking moments that occasionally erupt in this relatively minimalist Queen song, and Freddie Mercury so effectively delivered the ode to women of a larger size. Once I start listening to it I can’t stop until about seven repeats later. [Gwen Ihnat]
