Last Call: ’70s recipes, a happy song with Rivers Cuomo, and an unfathomable magic trick-September 2024

@70sdinnerparty on Instagram

  Sometimes I need to seek out new Instagram accounts just to break up the constant scroll of black lab puppies in my feed (don’t judge). This week my discovery is @70sdinnerparty, an account devoted to the most horrifying creations of a pretty weird culinary decade. Shrimp aspic or cabbage Christmas tree, anyone? [Kate Bernot]

“Sober Up” feat. Rivers Cuomo by AJR

  This is a happy song that popped up on the alternative radio station here in Chicago (Q101), and now I can’t stop listening to it. AJR’s “Sober Up” starts out with a hypnotic cello hook, and like the trio’s previous hit, “Weak,” it wrestles with substance abuse issues (“Won’t you help me sober up / All the big kids they are drunk / And I want to feel something again”). I find the song so (ironically) addictive that I was not surprised to find out that it features Weezer’s Rivers Cuomo; if only he’d used some of his genius here on his regular band’s latest album. Still, if he had, then “Sober Up” wouldn’t exist, and that would be terrible. Give it a listen, and then see how many nanoseconds it takes for you to hit replay. [Gwen Ihnat]

Magician Jerry Andrus

  Watch what magician Jerry Andrus does with a rubber ball, a sheet of plastic, and a piece of cardboard. It’s unfathomable. [Kevin Pang]
