On being a female music fan

I was an emo kid. I wore out my CDs containing the lyrics “And even if her plane crashes tonight, She’ll find some way to disappoint me/By not burning in the wreckage or drowning at the bottom of the sea.” I also repeatedly listened to songs in which Rivers Cuomo instructed his girlfriend not to wear makeup or leave the house while he was gone. (Thank god some angel turned me on to riot grrrl.) But I still like those woman-bashing songs, in some way, and found great solace in the essays contained in Under My Thumb: Songs That Hate Women And The Women Who Love Them. The authors write of their complicated relationships to songs by Guns N’ Roses, AC/DC, Kanye West, and other artists. In the end, many conclude, it’s possible to love the music and hate its message. [Kate Bernot]

80's remix of Gotye’s “Somebody That I Used To Know”

This is so great. Leagues better than the original, if you ask me. [Kevin Pang]
