Last Week Tonight With John Olivers run of Emmy Awards dominance continued Sunday.
The HBO series won its third straight trophy for best scripted variety series at the 2025 Emmys, in a category that has only existed for three years. It beat out NBCs Saturday Night Live, the only other nominee in the category.
Oliver raced through his acceptance speech for the award, responding to a running bit from host Nate Bargatze during the awards that winners who go over their allotted 45 seconds will cause the amount of a donation to the Boys and Girls Clubs of America to fall. Oliver came in well under that time, thanking his staff, his family and HBO and also slipping in a couple of bleeped-out fucks one of which he directed (jokingly) at Bargatze.
Last Week Tonight is on a 10-year streak of winning Emmys for its series category. Prior to the creation of the scripted variety series category in 2023, Last Week Tonight won seven straight Emmys for best variety talk series which in part led to the creation of the scripted variety series category, as Last Week Tonights largely scripted, once-a-week format is significantly different than the daily late-night shows that now compete for best talk series.
The Emmys were telecast live from the Peacock Theater at L.A. LIVE in Los Angeles Sunday on CBS and streamed on Paramount+. See thered carpet looks here.
