Jean Smart won the award for best comedy actress during the 2025 Emmys on Sunday night.
Smart was nominated alongside Uzo Aduba (The Residence), Kristen Bell (Nobody Wants This), Quinta Brunson (Abbott Elementary) and Ayo Edebiri (The Bear).
When taking the stage, Smart was quick to tell the audience that she was still in recovery from an injury: If I was walking like John Wayne, its cause I broke my knee this summer and its not quite repaired.
One of the best things about winning something like this is you get to publicly thank the people you work with, she continued, then thanking her unbelievable crew, incredible castmates and beyond brilliant showrunners. She also thanked her children who are her anchor and her cheerleader Joe [Pacheco]. Lets be good to each other, Smart finished her speech with.
The trophy marks Smarts second consecutive win in the comedy actress category for her role as Deborah Vance on the HBO Max series. This is Smarts seventh Emmy win from 14 career nominations. She won in the category during the 2024 Emmys.
It was announced in May that the streamer has renewed Hacks for a fifth season, making it the longest-running live-action show in Maxs history. Series creators and showrunnners Paul W. Downs, Lucia Aniello and Jen Statsky announced the renewal during an Emmy FYC screening in Los Angeles.
The current season has seen Smarts Deborah realize her dream of hosting a late-night talk show with Ava Daniels (Hannah Einbinder) as her head writer.
