James Gunn Says New Shot of Superman’s Face is “Zero CG”; Fans Say, “We Can Tell”-February 2024

A new 30-second TV spot for James Gunns upcoming Superman has fans questioning what, exactly, is going on with the Man of Steels face.

The ad, titled Icon, was released Jan. 27 and features David Corenswets Superman flying in an extended shot through a frozen tundra.

In the sequence, Corenswets eyes appear larger and farther apart than usual, causing one Threads user to note, Theres something with his face that looks a little off. I know theres plenty of time to refine the CG. To which Gunn replied: There is absolutely zero CG in his face. Peoples faces can look different when you put a wide angle lens up close. The background plate in Svalbard [Norway] is 100% real as is David.

Social media users a significant number of whom are loyalists to Henry Cavill and his version of Superman were quick to respond snarkily with comments like, I believe him, and, We can tell.

Meme responses took the ball and ran with the backlash, photoshopping the face of Steve Buscemis Mr. Deeds character, Crazy Eyes, and Marty Feldmans Igor from Young Frankenstein, over Corenswets face, among other googly-eyed characters.

The Warner Bros. epic hits cinemas on July 11, 2025. The cast also includes Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Isabel Merced as Hawkgirl and Milly Alcock as Supergirl.
