Illinois House Speaker Emanuel ‘Chris’ Welch on His First Year
Illinois House Speaker Emanuel ‘Chris’ Welch on His First Year-February 2024
Feb 15, 2026 1:28 AM

This week marks one year since Emanuel “Chris” Welch replaced Michael Madigan as Illinois’ House speaker.

Welch’s historic win followed Madigan’s decadeslong hold on political power in the Illinois House.

“There was a historic appointment in me being the first African American,” Welch said of his role as speaker. “I think my [role] has made a difference to Black boys and girls across the state. I also believe that moment being [sworn in] was symbolic because we seized the moment in a big way in this country. There has been a call for diversity, equity and inclusion. I have always called for it … so here I am today.”

Welch joined “Chicago Tonight” to recount his year in office, the ongoing remap battle andthe upcoming legislative session.
