Propagation of Chicory through Division

Chicory (Cichorium intybus) is a perennial herbaceous plant that belongs to the Asteraceae family. It is commonly grown for its edible leaves and roots, which are used in various culinary preparations. Propagation of chicory can be done through division, a method that involves separating the plant into smaller sections and replanting them to establish new individuals.

When to Divide Chicory

The ideal time to divide chicory is during the early spring or fall when the plant is dormant. Dividing chicory during these seasons allows the plant to recover quickly and establish itself before the onset of extreme weather conditions.

Steps to Divide Chicory

1. Prepare the Plant: Start by cutting back the foliage of the chicory plant to about 6 inches above the ground. This will help reduce stress on the plant during the division process.

2. Dig up the Plant: Carefully dig around the base of the chicory plant, ensuring that you do not damage the roots. Use a garden fork or shovel to gently lift the entire plant out of the ground.

3. Separate the Clumps: Once the plant is out of the ground, gently separate the clumps into smaller sections. Each section should have a healthy root system and a sufficient number of shoots.

4. Replant the Divisions: Choose a well-draining location in your garden or a suitable container for replanting the chicory divisions. Dig holes that are slightly larger than the root systems of the divisions and place them in the holes, ensuring that the shoots are above the soil surface. Backfill the holes with soil and gently firm it around the divisions.

5. Water and Mulch: After replanting, water the divisions thoroughly to help settle the soil and promote root establishment. Apply a layer of organic mulch around the base of the plants to conserve moisture and suppress weed growth.

Care for Divided Chicory

Divided chicory requires regular watering to keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. It is also important to provide adequate sunlight, preferably 6-8 hours per day, for optimal growth. Fertilize the plants with a balanced organic fertilizer according to the manufacturer’s instructions to promote healthy foliage and root development.

Monitor the divided chicory for any signs of pests or diseases and take appropriate measures to control them. Regularly remove any weeds that may compete with the plants for nutrients and space.
