Definition: How to Make Sweet Elderberry Syrup

Elderberry syrup is a delicious and nutritious concoction made from the berries of the elderberry plant (Sambucus nigra). It is known for its rich flavor and numerous health benefits, including boosting the immune system and providing relief from cold and flu symptoms.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups fresh elderberries
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup honey
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 1 teaspoon grated ginger
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice

Instructions:

  • Start by rinsing the elderberries thoroughly under cold water to remove any dirt or debris.
  • In a medium-sized saucepan, combine the elderberries, water, cinnamon stick, and grated ginger.
  • Bring the mixture to a boil over medium heat, then reduce the heat and let it simmer for about 30 minutes or until the berries are soft and mushy.
  • Remove the saucepan from the heat and let the mixture cool slightly.
  • Using a fine-mesh strainer or cheesecloth, strain the mixture into a clean bowl, pressing down on the berries to extract as much liquid as possible.
  • Discard the solids and return the liquid to the saucepan.
  • Add the honey and lemon juice to the liquid and stir well until the honey is completely dissolved.
  • Place the saucepan back on the stove over low heat and simmer the mixture for an additional 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  • Remove from heat and let the syrup cool completely.
  • Once cooled, transfer the syrup to a sterilized glass jar or bottle for storage.
