How to Make Pepino Jam or Preserves

Pepino, also known as melon pear or sweet cucumber, is a fruit that belongs to the Solanaceae family. It is native to South America and is widely cultivated for its sweet and juicy flesh. Making pepino jam or preserves is a great way to enjoy the fruit’s unique flavor and preserve it for longer periods.

Ingredients:

  • 4 cups of diced pepino
  • 2 cups of granulated sugar
  • 1 lemon (juiced)
  • 1 teaspoon of lemon zest
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract

Instructions:

  • Wash and peel the pepino. Remove the seeds and dice it into small pieces.
  • In a large saucepan, combine the diced pepino, granulated sugar, lemon juice, and lemon zest.
  • Place the saucepan over medium heat and bring the mixture to a boil, stirring occasionally.
  • Reduce the heat to low and let the mixture simmer for about 30-40 minutes, or until the pepino becomes soft and translucent.
  • Stir in the vanilla extract and continue to simmer for an additional 5 minutes.
  • Remove the saucepan from the heat and let the jam cool for a few minutes.
  • Transfer the jam into sterilized jars, leaving about 1/4 inch of headspace.
  • Seal the jars tightly and process them in a water bath canner for about 10 minutes.
  • Remove the jars from the canner and let them cool completely before storing them in a cool, dark place.
