Indian Plum Jam: A Delicious Homemade Delight

Indian Plum jam is a delectable preserve made from the succulent fruits of the Indian Plum tree, scientifically known as Oemleria cerasiformis. This small deciduous tree is native to North America and is also commonly referred to as the Osoberry or the Bird Cherry. The Indian Plum tree produces clusters of small, round fruits that are similar in appearance to plums, hence the name.

Ingredients:

  • 4 cups Indian Plum fruits
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon lemon zest

Instructions:

  • Wash the Indian Plum fruits thoroughly and remove any stems or leaves.
  • Place the fruits in a large saucepan and add enough water to cover them.
  • Bring the mixture to a boil over medium heat and let it simmer for about 15 minutes, or until the fruits are soft and pulpy.
  • Remove the saucepan from heat and let the mixture cool slightly.
  • Using a potato masher or a fork, mash the fruits to release their juices.
  • Strain the mixture through a fine-mesh sieve or cheesecloth to remove any seeds or pulp.
  • Return the strained juice to the saucepan and add the sugar, lemon juice, and lemon zest.
  • Stir the mixture well and bring it to a boil over medium-high heat.
  • Reduce the heat to low and let the jam simmer for about 30-40 minutes, or until it thickens to your desired consistency.
  • While the jam is still hot, carefully pour it into sterilized jars, leaving about 1/4 inch of headspace.
  • Seal the jars tightly with lids and let them cool completely.
  • Store the Indian Plum jam in a cool, dark place for up to a year.
