Definition: How to Make Huckleberry Jam?

Huckleberry jam is a delicious preserve made from huckleberries, which are small, dark purple berries that grow on shrubs in the wild. This sweet and tangy jam is a popular treat enjoyed by many, and making it at home is a rewarding and enjoyable process.

Ingredients:

  • 4 cups huckleberries
  • 4 cups granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup lemon juice
  • 1 package pectin

Instructions:

  • Wash the huckleberries thoroughly and remove any stems or leaves.
  • In a large pot, combine the huckleberries, sugar, and lemon juice.
  • Place the pot over medium heat and bring the mixture to a boil, stirring constantly.
  • Once the mixture reaches a rolling boil, add the pectin and continue stirring for 1 minute.
  • Reduce the heat to low and simmer the jam for about 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  • While the jam is simmering, prepare the canning jars by sterilizing them in boiling water.
  • After 20 minutes, remove the jam from the heat and skim off any foam that may have formed on the surface.
  • Ladle the hot jam into the sterilized jars, leaving about 1/4 inch of headspace.
  • Wipe the rims of the jars clean and seal them with the lids and bands.
  • Process the jars in a boiling water bath for 10 minutes to ensure proper sealing.
  • Remove the jars from the water bath and let them cool completely.
  • Check the seals on the jars by pressing down on the center of each lid. If it doesn’t pop back, the jar is properly sealed.
  • Store the huckleberry jam in a cool, dark place for up to a year.
