How to Grow Wild Rocket

Definition: Wild rocket, also known as arugula or rucola, is a leafy green vegetable with a distinct peppery flavor. It belongs to the Brassicaceae family and is commonly used in salads, sandwiches, and as a garnish.

1. Choosing the Right Location

Wild rocket thrives in cool weather, so it’s best to grow it in early spring or fall. Select a location that receives partial shade, especially during the hot summer months. The soil should be well-draining and rich in organic matter.

2. Preparing the Soil

Before planting, prepare the soil by removing any weeds and loosening it with a garden fork or tiller. Incorporate compost or well-rotted manure to improve soil fertility and drainage. Wild rocket prefers a slightly acidic soil with a pH level between 6.0 and 6.5.

3. Sowing the Seeds

Sow wild rocket seeds directly into the prepared soil, spacing them about 1 inch apart. Plant the seeds at a depth of ¼ to ½ inch. If you prefer, you can also start the seeds indoors in seed trays and transplant them later.

4. Watering and Care

Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Water the plants regularly, especially during dry spells. Avoid overhead watering to prevent the development of fungal diseases. Mulching around the plants can help retain moisture and suppress weed growth.

5. Harvesting

Wild rocket leaves can be harvested when they reach a desirable size, usually around 4 to 6 inches in length. You can either harvest the outer leaves individually or cut the entire plant about 2 inches above the soil level. Regular harvesting promotes continuous growth and prevents the plants from bolting.

6. Pests and Diseases

Wild rocket is generally resistant to many pests and diseases. However, keep an eye out for aphids, flea beetles, and slugs. Use organic pest control methods such as handpicking or spraying with a mixture of water and mild soap. Proper spacing and good air circulation can also help prevent fungal diseases.
