How to Extract Oil from Tung Tree Seeds?

Tung tree (Vernicia fordii) is a deciduous tree native to East Asia, known for its valuable oil-rich seeds. The oil extracted from these seeds, commonly referred to as tung oil, has various applications in industries such as woodworking, paint, and varnish.

Seed Collection and Preparation

Harvesting tung tree seeds is typically done in late autumn when the seed pods turn brown and start to split open. The seeds are collected by hand or by shaking the branches gently, allowing the ripe seeds to fall onto a tarp or sheet.

Once collected, the seeds need to be cleaned and dried before the oil extraction process. This involves removing any debris, such as twigs or leaves, and allowing the seeds to air dry for a few days until their moisture content is reduced.

Oil Extraction Methods

There are several methods available for extracting oil from tung tree seeds. The most common methods include:

  • Pressing Method: In this method, the dried tung tree seeds are subjected to mechanical pressure to extract the oil. The seeds are typically crushed or ground into a paste before being pressed using a hydraulic or screw press. The resulting oil is then separated from the seed cake.
  • Solvent Extraction: Solvent extraction involves using a solvent, such as hexane, to dissolve the oil from the seeds. The seeds are first crushed or ground, and then the oil is extracted by soaking the crushed seeds in the solvent. The solvent-oil mixture is then separated, and the solvent is evaporated to obtain the pure tung oil.
  • Expeller Pressing: Expeller pressing is a variation of the pressing method where the seeds are heated before being pressed. The heat helps to increase the oil yield by reducing the viscosity of the oil. The heated seeds are then pressed to extract the oil, which is subsequently filtered to remove any impurities.

    Refining and Storage

After the oil extraction process, the crude tung oil may undergo further refining to remove any remaining impurities or unwanted components. This refining process typically involves filtering the oil and subjecting it to heat and chemical treatments to improve its clarity and stability.

Once refined, the tung oil is stored in airtight containers, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures, to maintain its quality and extend its shelf life.

Note: It is important to follow proper safety precautions and consult professional guidance when extracting oil from tung tree seeds, as some methods may involve the use of flammable solvents or machinery.
