Qingma Propagation
Definition: Qingma, also known as Chinese quince or Pseudocydonia sinensis, is a deciduous fruit tree native to China. It is primarily propagated through two methods: seed propagation and vegetative propagation.Seed Propagation
Seed propagation is the most common method used to propagate Qingma. Here is a step-by-step guide on how to propagate Qingma from seeds:Vegetative Propagation
Vegetative propagation is another method used to propagate Qingma, especially for preserving specific cultivars with desirable traits. The most common techniques for vegetative propagation include:- Layering: Select a healthy and low-growing branch of the Qingma tree. Bury a section of the branch in the soil, leaving the tip exposed. The buried section will develop roots, and once rooted, it can be separated from the parent plant and transplanted.
- Grafting: Choose a suitable rootstock, preferably a closely related species or a compatible cultivar. Make a clean and slanting cut on the rootstock and a corresponding cut on the scion, which is a young shoot or bud from the desired Qingma cultivar. Join the two cuts together and secure them with grafting tape or a grafting clip. The grafted plant should be kept in a warm and humid environment until the graft union has healed.
- Cutting: Take semi-hardwood cuttings from healthy Qingma trees during the dormant season. Remove the leaves from the lower half of the cutting and dip the cut end in a rooting hormone. Plant the cuttings in a well-draining rooting medium and keep them in a warm and humid environment until they develop roots.
By employing these propagation methods, growers can successfully propagate Qingma and expand their orchards or preserve specific cultivars with desirable traits.
