How does electronic waste affect the ozone layer?

Electronic waste, also known as e-waste, refers to discarded electronic devices such as computers, smartphones, televisions, and other electronic equipment. These devices contain hazardous materials, including ozone-depleting substances (ODS), which can have a detrimental impact on the ozone layer.

Understanding the Ozone Layer

The ozone layer is a protective layer of ozone gas located in the Earth’s stratosphere, approximately 10 to 50 kilometers above the Earth’s surface. It plays a crucial role in shielding the Earth from harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation emitted by the sun.

Ozone molecules in the ozone layer absorb and dissipate UV radiation, preventing it from reaching the Earth’s surface. This protection is vital as excessive UV radiation can cause various health issues, including skin cancer, cataracts, and weakened immune systems.

The Impact of Electronic Waste
