Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) is a rare but severe viral disease that affects both humans and horses. It is primarily transmitted through the bite of infected mosquitoes, particularly those belonging to the Culiseta melanura species, commonly known as the “eastern tree-hole mosquito.”

Mosquitoes as Vectors

Female mosquitoes become infected with the EEE virus when they feed on infected birds, which serve as the primary reservoir for the virus.

Once infected, the mosquitoes undergo a process called viral amplification. During this stage, the virus replicates and multiplies within the mosquito’s body, eventually reaching its salivary glands. When the infected mosquito bites a new host, it injects the virus-laden saliva into the bloodstream, facilitating the transmission of EEE.

The transmission of EEE is influenced by various ecological factors. The eastern tree-hole mosquito, which is the primary vector for EEE, thrives in freshwater swamps and hardwood forests. Additionally, the presence of infected birds in these areas contributes to the amplification and maintenance of the virus within the mosquito population.

Human Infection

Humans are considered incidental hosts for the EEE virus. While infected mosquitoes primarily target birds, they may occasionally bite humans, horses, or other mammals. Once the virus enters a human host, it can cause severe neurological symptoms, including high fever, headache, stiff neck, and in some cases, encephalitis (inflammation of the brain).
