When an individual is exposed to an allergen, such as pollen, dust mites, pet dander, or certain foods, their immune system reacts by releasing histamines. Histamines are chemicals that cause inflammation and dilation of blood vessels.

In the case of allergies, histamines can cause blood vessels under the eyes to become dilated and leaky. This leakage leads to the accumulation of blood and fluid in the surrounding tissues, resulting in swelling and discoloration.
