Gibson Recipe-February 2024
Feb 12, 2026 1:35 AM

There are many variations of the classic Dry Martini, and this mix was created in the 1940s for Charles Dana Gibson, a US illustrator, and presumably a ladies' man, too — the two cocktail onions are said to represent the breasts of his female admirers! As far as the mix goes, the onions take the biting edge off the gin and add their own layer of complexity.

Ingredients

Serves 1

  1 1/2 oz (45 ml) Plymouth gin

1/2 oz (15 ml) dry vermouth

  two white cocktail onions

Equipment

Mixing glass

  Stirring spoon

  Strainer

  Chilled Martini glass

Method

Place some ice in the mixing glass and pour in the vermouth. Stir and strain away the liquid. Pour in the gin and stir again. Strain into the Martini glass containing the two onions on a cocktail stick.
