For Aurora Mayor Richard Irvin, managing his city’s response to the coronavirus pandemic has been a personal battle, too. Last month, he tested positive for the virus.

In a video posted online March 31, Irvin detailed his battle with COVID-19, and implored Aurora residents to follow health guidelines like social distancing.

“We’re going to be able to beat this virus, if we all follow these simple rules, these simple directions, and make sure we flatten the curve,” he said. “Looking out for one another is the way we’re going to win this war.”

Irvin has now made a full recovery, as has Aurora Police Chief Kristen Ziman, who also tested positive for the virus.

As of Thursday, Aurora had 244 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and five deaths attributed to COVID-19.

Earlier this month, the Aurora City Councilextended the city's Emergency Declaration to May 15, which will keep parks, museums and other public buildings closed. Illinois’ current stay-at-home order runs until April 30.
