Well Go USA has snapped up North American theatrical rights to Korean crime-thriller Yadang: The Snitch, starring Squid Games Kang Ha-neul. The company acquired the film from powerhouse Korean production company Plus M and plans to release it in North American theaters this spring. The deal was revealed Tuesday at Hong Kongs Filmart content market.

Directed by Hwang Byeong-gug (Wedding Campaign, S.I.U.), Yadang: The Snitch is billed as an innovative take on the drug-lord crime saga. Yoo Hai-jin (Exhuma) and Park Hae-joon (12.12: The Day) co-star alongside Kang. Kang plays Kang-suee, a street-savvy survivor caught between the law and the criminal underworld. Falsely accused and sent to prison, he strikes a risky deal with an ambitious prosecutor, Kuee Gwan-hee (Yoo): become an informant and earn his freedom. But as he dives deeper into the dangerous world of drug lords, corrupt officials and deadly conspiracies, Kang-suee realizes hes just a pawn in a much bigger game where trust is a luxury and betrayal comes at a price.

Hwang revealed a a recent promotional event in Seoul that he was inspired to make the film after reading a news article in the local press about underworld snitches who regularly visit Korean prosecutors offices to share information in exchange for favors. The director said he thought focussing on the role of the informant might distinguish his story from other Korean drug war movies released in recent years.

They appear to be working legally, yet theres something dubious about them. They exist in a gray area, the director said, according to coverage in the Korean Times. I thought it would make for an interesting film.
