The victory lap for Japanese screen legend and FX hit Shogun star Hiroyuki Sanada continues. Polandspioneering EnergaCamerimage International Film Festival, which focuses foremost on excellence in cinematography, said Thursday that Sanada will receive an award for best TV series performance at the events upcoming 32nd edition in Toru.

Sanadas honor will be the first time the festival awards an actor for a performance on the small screen, another expansion of the prestigious festivals ambit.

Rather like the regal Lord Toranaga he plays on FXs hit show, Sanda is currently in active campaign mode as Shogun prepares to compete at the upcoming 2024 Emmys in more categories than any other drama. Sanada is personally nominated both for the best actor in a drama category and as a producer for the show as it competes in the outstanding drama series race. But while Shoguns huge success it was recently renewed for two more seasons has brought Sanada a whole new level of global recognition, he has been a screen icon at home in Japan for decades. The actor famously appeared in his first movie at age five and he has acted in over 50 Japanese features since, including Yoji Yamadas 2002 Oscar nominee The Twilight Samurai. Rare among Japanese stars of his generation, Sanada also crossed over to the highest levels of Hollywood years ago. He was recently seen in John Wick: Chapter 4 (2023), with Keanu Reeves and Donnie Yen, and Bullet Train (2022), opposite Brad Pitt. Other U.S. film credits include The Last Samurai (2003), The Wolverine (2013), 47 Ronin (2013), Avengers: Endgame (2019), Minions (2015) and Mortal Kombat (2021).

Hiroyuki Sanada is a true ambassador of the cinematic arts, and his impact on both Japanese and global cinema is invaluable, said Marek ydowicz, EnergaCamerimages director. It is an honor for us to be able to recognize such an outstanding artist.

Two-time Oscar-winning actressCate Blanchettwill serve as the jury president for the main competition at EnergaCAMERIMAGE this year. The festival runs Nov. 16-23 in Torun, Poland.
