Drake and Josh star Drake Bell has opened up about having to work alongside Brian Peck on a Nickelodeon kids TV show set before his former dialogue coach was convicted of sexually assaulting the former child actor in 2004.
Where I felt most comfortable, where I was the happiest was when I was on set with you guys. And the worst part was every day I got there, the monster was there, you know? Bell told former co-star Josh Peck during a reunion on an episode of Dear Medias Good Guys podcast, which Josh Peck hosts with entrepreneur Ben Soffer, that dropped on Monday. Bell was the biggest former child actor to allege having faced toxic workplaces atNickelodeon while performing on kids TV hitmaker Dan Schneiders popular shows as part of Investigation Discoverys docuseriesQuiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV that bowed in March 2024. The ID four-parter featured allegations of abuse, sexism, racism and inappropriate behavior involving underage stars and crewmembers on Nickelodeon series overseen by Schneider.
The first of a two-part podcast conversation between Bell and Peck had the entertainers talking about growing up in a Hollywood spotlight and the industry culture facing child actors on set.I remember people would ask me about the show or something. And I would say, Well, I lost 100 pounds and had to get sober at 21. Did I seem happy? Josh Peck said on the podcast.
But its Brian Pecks arrest and trial that provides the dramatic high points of the podcast. Josh Peck recalled: And I remember, I think it was months after this, I got a text from someone who worked on the show saying, Brians arrested. Hes going to jail. And I think through my simple teenager mind, I just thought, Oh, thank God. Thank God. Hes going to jail. Good.
Josh Peck added, however, that he never fully processed the impact on actor-musician Bell until he saw Quiet on Set. Its only in watching the doc that I can realize that just him being put to justice, which thank God he was, and deserved, and deserved to go longer, but like, what about you? What about the trauma you endured? Its so much; its so much deeper. Its so much more unacceptable. Its not this clean. Well, he went to jail, so everyones all better, Josh Peck told Bell.
The third episode ofQuiet on Setcentered on Bell graphically recounting how he was allegedly groomed and suffered alleged sexual abuse at the hands of Brian Peck. In 2003, Peck was accused of molesting a child. He was subsequently convicted of a lewd act against a child and oral copulation of a person under 16 and spent 16 months in prison.
On Mondays podcast episode, Bell recounted sitting in a trial courtroom filled with supporters of Brian Peck and where 41 letters of additional support were eventually put before the court at the former Nickelodeon employees 2004 sentencing.
It was hard, I think, during that time because when we went to court, the entire side of his courtroom was full of people who I thought were my friends and people who I looked up to, people whose careers I would like mine to be one day, and Im on the side it was me and my mom, Bell recounted.
And Josh Peck highlighted his anger at so many Hollywood stars backing Bells abuser in open court. For you to find these 41 letters that they discovered of people who were sort of writing basically they were, like, they were character witnesses of Brians, right? Like, defending him Its fucking bonkers, insane.
The second part of the Bells interview with Josh Peck, which was teased on Instagram on Monday, will air on Thursday. The podcast also coincides with Bells release of his latest album Non Stop Flight, a 35-track, semi-autobiographical collection of tunes.
