A former Chicago mayoral candidate who lost to Rahm Emanuel in 2011 is back in the race now that his former foe has withdrawn.

With 24 percent of the vote in the 2011 mayoral election, attorney Gery Chico got fewer than half as many votes as Emanuel.

But Chico’s no stranger to City Hall.

A few years after Chico graduated from college in 1978, he worked under longtime Ald. Ed Burke, 14th Ward, in the City Council Finance Committee.

Beyond practicing law and lobbying, Chico has served as Mayor Richard M. Daley’s chief of staff, president of the Chicago Board of Education and head of the Chicago Park District, among other roles.

Chico is the only declared Hispanic candidate in the crowded mayoral race, although a political committee created Wednesday by Jesus “Chuy” Garcia’s camp may change that.
