City Colleges of Chicago support staff and college administration announced early Thursday they have come to terms on a new contract agreement, one day after hundreds of employees walked off the job in a strike.

After 10 hours of bargaining Wednesday, striking full- and part-time employees reached an agreement with CCC administration.

The 450 employees represented by the Federation of College Clerical and Technical Personnel (FCCTP) union complained they’d been working without a contract for nearly three years, while many employees made less than the city’s minimum wage and could not afford health care.

The two sides issued a joint statement Thursday, saying: “The City Colleges of Chicago staff and administration are proud to announce that we have come to a tentative agreement. We are dedicated to our work and our students and eager to get back to work. More details will be available in the coming days.”

Details of the contract were not immediately available Thursday afternoon, according to a spokeswoman from the Illinois Federation of Teachers, which is affiliated with the FCCTP. She said the union’s bargaining team is working to share that information with members first before making it public.

Last week, 87 percent of voting federation members opted to reject CCC’s latest contract offer. They say administration has refused to fill a backlog of position vacancies, which places additional burdens on FCCTP employees, a majority of whom are black and brown women who make less than $13 per hour.

FCCTP members will consider and vote on the tentative agreement before it can take effect.
