Childhood Obesity-May 2024
May 10, 2025 9:32 AM

About 5 percent of American youth are "severely obese," according to a new study by the American Heart Association, and that’s a figure on the rise. The health consequences of this newly defined class are severe, ranging from type 2 diabetes to cardiovascular issues at younger ages. Treating severe pediatric obesity is challenging; lifestyle modifications are less effective while more intensive methods are not always appropriate or available for children. What can be done to combat this rise? We talk with Dr. Rebecca Unger, who has worked in Lurie Children's Hospital's Wellness and Weight Management Clinic for 25 years,Dr. Yang-Xin Fu, a pathologist at the University of Chicago, andDr. Vincent Bufalino, a cardiologist with the American Heart Association.
