A Chicago woman allegedly told police she doesn’t “deserve this” as she was being arrested after crashing her vehicle into a ride-hailing service driver, causing him to flip through the air head over heels twice, prosecutors said.

Ayca Sarialioglu, 29, was arrested and charged with felony counts of failing to report an accident involving injury and leaving the scene of a traffic accident involving injury. She also faces a misdemeanor count of driving under the influence of alcohol stemming from the incidentMonday.

Cook County Judge Ankur Srivastava set Sarialioglu’s bond at $5,000. She must pay 10% of that amount to be released from custody.

According to Assistant State’s Attorney Alexander Konetzki, Sarialioglu was at Water Tower Place that evening getting drinks with a friend before she walked to retrieve her brown Nissan Altima that was parked in the facility’s garage around 6:45 p.m.

As she left, Sarialioglu allegedly crashed into a parked van and continued on, before she was seen exiting the garage at a high rate of speed eastbound down Chestnut Street.

As she continued down Chestnut, she struck the victim — a 40-year-old man — who was standing outside of his vehicle in a dropoff/pick-up area outside the former John Hancock Center, now named 875 North Michigan Avenue, according to Konetzki.

The victim had his back to Sarialioglu’s vehicle and did not see it coming when he was struck, but the force of the collision was enough to launch him into the air and toss him head over heels twice before he landed on the pavement, Konetzki said.

Sarialioglu allegedly did not stop after the crash, but instead sped off toward Michigan Avenue and ran through a red light. The victim survived, but was hospitalized in critical condition and remains in the intensive care unit as of Wednesday.

About 15 minutes after the crash, a 911 caller reported that a woman, later allegedly identified as Sarialioglu, appeared to be passed out behind the wheel of a vehicle that had significant damage in the 300 block of West Erie Street — less than a mile from where the man was struck. When witnesses approached to provide assistance, she “responded aggressively” to them, according to Konetzki.

Police officers arrived on scene and smelled a “strong odor” of alcohol on Sarialioglu,Konetzki said, but she refused to participate in field sobriety or breathalyzer tests. After she was placed into custody and told the victim had been hospitalized, Sarialioglu allegedly made statements including “I hurt him that bad?” and “I’m so sorry for anything that I caused you tonight, but at the same time, I don’t deserve this.”

She also allegedly admitted she had two drinks and “absolutely shouldn’t have driven.”

Investigators recovered surveillance video showing Sarialioglu’s path from Water Tower Place to her car as well as the collision itself, according to Konetzki.

In setting bond Wednesday, Srivastava told Sarialioglu she was “fortunate” the victim survived his injuries.

“We’re all very fortunate that this (case) isn’t across the hall in Courtroom 102 where they deal with vehicular homicides and things like that,” he said, “because this could have been much more serious.”
