The Chicago Police Department says it will be deploying additional patrols this weekend to local mosques and synagogues as tensions continue amid the Israel-Hamas war.
The CPD in a statement Friday said that while there is “no actionable intelligence” relating to any credible active threats to the Chicago area, there will be an increased presence of uniformed officers across the city, particularly in Jewish and Palestinian community areas, out of an “abundance of caution.”
“CPD is closely monitoring the situation alongside our local, state and federal partners,” the department said. “Additionally, we are continuing to pay special attention to synagogues and mosques throughout our city.”
The statement comes days after a surprise attack by Hamas militants in Israel, followed by a significant Israeli military response in the Gaza Strip. The war has claimed at least 2,800 lives on both sides since Oct. 7, according to the Associated Press.
Palestinians fled in a mass exodus from northern Gaza Friday after Israel’s military told some 1 million people to evacuate toward the southern part of the besieged territory, an unprecedented order ahead of an expected ground invasion against the ruling Hamas militant group.
The FBI’s Chicago office said Friday that while it is aware of “open-source reports about calls for global action,” there are no known credible threats to Chicago.
“FBI-Chicago is working closely with our law enforcement partners in Chicago and surrounding areas to share information and identify and disrupt any threats that may emerge,” an FBI spokesperson said in a statement. “As always, we take seriously any tips or leads we receive regarding potential threats and investigate them rigorously to determine their credibility.”
The FBI said anyone wishing to submit a tip can do so at tips.fbi.gov or by calling 1-800-CALL-FBI.
In its statement, the CPD said it mourns all the innocent victims killed in Israel and Gaza, and stands “with all those affected by this heartbreaking and horrific tragedy” in Chicago and around the world.
“As this situation continues, we will remain in close communication with community leaders and elected officials,” the police department said. “CPD continues its mission to keep all residents and visitors in our city safe.”
