Chicago Petcoke Ordinance Passes
Chicago Petcoke Ordinance Passes-February 2024
Feb 18, 2026 2:59 PM

The Chicago City Council passed an ordinance regulating petcoke today.Petcoke is a coal like substance, a byproduct of refining oil. Huge piles of petcoke have been building up along the Calumet River from the BP Refinery in Whiting, Ind. Neighbors say their homes and yards are blanketed with dirty petcoke dust when the wind blows. The Council's new ordinance does put new restrictions on the handling of petcoke, but the community says it's far from enough protection for the neighborhood. Elizabeth Brackett has the story.
