2020 was a wacky weather year. Chicago was warmer and wetter than normal in 2020, according to a National Weather Service climate summary.

The mean average temperature of 53.3 degrees was the fifth warmest on record (since 1871), at 3.4 degrees above normal, NWS data shows.

The city set a number of daily high temperature records, including 52 degrees on Feb. 2, 94 degrees on June 2 and a slew of days in November that topped 70 degrees. The entire summer was the warmest on record with a mean average temperature of 76.7 degrees, NWS data shows.

Precipitation totaled 39.22 inches for 2020, which is 2.33 inches above normal, according to NWS data. High water marks included the wettest May on record, with 9.51 inches of precipitation, and the second wettest spring, with 16.8 inches of rain.

Adding to the weirdness that was 2020: Total snowfall was well below normal — 28 inches, which is 8.3 inches less than typical — but there were a pair of record-setting days — in April. Daily snowfall measured 1.7 inches on April 15 and 3 inches on April 17.
