There is a heated primary battle for Cook County Assessor. That’s the post that assesses the value of each of the county’s nearly two million properties, thus determining what level of property taxes residential and commercial property owners pay.

Incumbent Assessor Fritz Kaegi took over after defeating Joe Berrios who presided over a system many claimed catered to the wealthy and clouted.

But Kaegi’s challenger, Metropolitan Water Reclamation District Board Chair Kari Steele says Kaegi has not fixed the system.
