Brian Cox Slams Johnny Depp, Ian McKellen, Edward Norton in Latest Broadside at Fellow Actors-May 2024
May 22, 2026 2:13 AM

Brian Cox is doing it again.

The Succession actor unloaded on several fellow actors during a wide-ranging interview with The Times UK.

Cox took aim at Johnny Depp, Ian McKellen, Edward Norton, as well as director Quentin Tarantino and President Donald Trump in his latest unfiltered remarks.

Youre just reading this for the tea, so here it is:

Johnny Depp: Cox said he turned down a role in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise because he didnt want to work with the actor, who he called so overblown, so overrated. Gary Oldman: Cox worked with the Slow Horses star on the Winston Churchill biopic Darkest Hour, for which Oldman won an Oscar for best actor. Cox called Oldmans performance cobblers (Scottish slang for nonsense) and a crowd-pleasing farrago (meaning a mishmash).

Ian McKellen: Cox was relatively polite by his standards merely saying the rather beloved Lord of the Rings actors performances are not to my taste.

Edward Norton: A pain in the arse.

Kevin Spacey: A stupid, stupid man.

Margot Robbie in Wuthering Heights: Margot Robbie is far too beautiful for that role.

Quentin Tarantino: Meretricious (defined as apparently attractive but having in reality no value or integrity). Cox added, [When directing] I like to honor the actors performance. With a Quentin Tarantino film, what you see is all Quentin Tarantino.

Donald Trump: Trump doesnt give a shit about the people. Hes only interested in the oil [in Iran]. Theres just sheer fucking greed motivating him, nothing else. The idea hes liberating people is a nonsense.

Ironically, Cox added that he just filmed a new series of ads for McDonalds Happy Meals (hes done voiceover ads for the company previously, as well).

Cox is currently promoting his new film, Glenrothan, which he directed. He previously made headlines mainly for criticizing his fellow Succession star Jeremy Strong, and calling his method acting fucking annoying. This time around, Cox said, I dont want to go on about Jeremy, because Ive got into a lot of problems and hes begged me to stop talking about him. Hes a good actor, Jeremy.

Asked if all his griping about fellow Hollywood talents has cost him anything, personally or career-wise, Cox replied, Well, I dont know yet if its caused me problems. I mean, my wife keeps saying, Brian, be careful. Brian, be careful. I think, Fuck it, I dont want to be careful any more! Ill be 80 this year. Fuck it! Im gonna say what I want to say.
