Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman have a not-so-cordial split in the first trailer for The Roses, the forthcoming remake of The War of the Roses.
Jay Roach directed the new movie from a script by Tony McNamara. Hitting theaters Aug. 29 from Searchlight Pictures, the projects cast includes Andy Samberg, Allison Janney, Ncuti Gatwa, Jamie Demetriou, Zo Chao, Belinda Bromilow and Kate McKinnon.
The ribald footage shared at CinemaCon shows Cumberbatch and Colman as a happy couple who quickly fall apart and seem to have fun doing just that. I suppose sometimes I do hate you, Cumberbatch says to Colman in the trailer before clarifying, Sporadic hatred. As things sour, Colmans character quips about her hubby, Sometimes hes got his cock in me, and I cant really tell. Soon, Cumberbatch gets an unwelcome surprise while hes soaking in the bath tub.
Toward the end of the trailer, Cumberbatch observes, Things are getting a little out of hand. Colman fires back, You think?
The Roses centers on a seemingly ideal married couple, Ivy (Colman) and Theo (Cumberbatch), whose relationship changes dramatically after Theos career sputters while Ivys flourishes.
The film is based on author Warren Adlers 1981 novel of the same name. The book was previously adapted into a 1988 feature that starred Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner as the titular couple and included a supporting role from Danny DeVito, who also directed.
CinemaCon is the annual event for exhibitors and Hollywood studios that runs this year from March 31 to April 3. It is presented by Cinema United (formerly the National Association of Theatre Owners).
