‘Awards Chatter’ Pod: Jane Lynch on ‘Only Murders,’ Christopher Guest Collabs and Sue Sylvester’s Funniest Lines-May 2024
May 18, 2025 3:16 PM

Notorious scene-stealer Jane Lynch is the guest on this episode of The Hollywood Reporters Awards Chatter podcast, which was recorded at the Boulder International Film Festival. Lynch is best known her comedic work in four Christopher Guest mockumentaries; big studio comedies like The 40-Year-Old Virgin and Talladega Nights; and the beloved TV series Glee, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and, most recently, Only Murders in the Building, on which she played Sazz Pataki, the longtime stunt double for Steve Martins Charles-Haden Savage.

Lynch, 64, who was at the fest to receive its Entertainer of the Year Award, has been nominated for 14 Primetime Emmy awards, winning five: one for best supporting actress in a comedy series, for Glee; two for best host for a reality or competition program, for Hollywood Game Night; one for best actress in a short form series, for Dropping the Soap; and one for best guest actress in a comedy series, for The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. And shes very much back in contention this season for her work on the fourth season of Only Murders in the Building, on which the murder of her character is investigated. Whats perhaps most remarkable about her journey, as is discussed during this episode, is that all of the aforementioned successes and accolades came after she turned 40!

Over the course of this conversation, Lynch discusses the happy accidents (also the name of her bestselling 2011 memoir) that led to her big breaks, including the way in which she met and re-met Guest; the real-life inspiration for her Glee character Sue Sylvester, and what she regards as Sylvesters funniest lines; how her Maisel character grew from a guest part into a regular; how she and Martin coordinated the physical comedy performed by their characters on Only Murders; plus much more.
