Universals forthcoming Miami Vice movie appears to have found its Crockett.

Austin Butler is in talks to play James Sonny Crockett in director Joseph Kosinskis planned adaptation of the 1980s NBC series that saw Don Johnson originate the role. The Hollywood Reporter reported earlier this week that Michael B. Jordan is in talks to portray fellow Miami undercover detective Ricardo Rico Tubbs, which was Philip Michael Thomas role on the show.

This new project has a script from Eric Warren Singer and Dan Gilroy. Kosinski, who directed this years F1, produces the adaptation with Dylan Clark (The Batman). The Miami Vice movie is said to be inspired by the shows pilot episode and first season and is set to explore the glitz and corruption of mid-80s Miami.

Universal has scheduled the film for theatrical release on Aug. 6, 2027. Shooting is set to begin next year.

Anthony Yerkovich created the original Miami Vice series that premiered in September 1984 and ran for five seasons. The show became a cultural touchstone for the decade and is known for its characters pastel-heavy and sock-free fashion senses.

Michael Mann, who served as executive producer on the 80s series, helmed a feature adaptation of Miami Vice starring Colin Farrell as Crockett and Jamie Foxx as Tubbs. Universal released the film in July 2006, and it collected $163 million globally ($263 million today).

The ambition of the show was to break the form of everything that had come before, Mann told THR in an interview last year.
