Alderpeople Address Budget Shortfall, Police Tensions-May 2024

The city of Chicago is still in financial recovery mode afterMayor Lori Lightfoot on Wednesday announceda projected $733 million budget deficit for the 2022 fiscal year – a shortfall 40% less than the previous year.

Also on Wednesday, City Council discussed the investment of more than $35 million in federal stimulus funds toward community programs aimed at youth violence prevention, childcare assistance, and other causes.

The recent fatal shooting of a Chicago police officer has roiled tensions between thepolice department and mayor’s officeas well asamong alderpeople.
