Categories of Air Quality Levels in the AQI

The Air Quality Index (AQI) is a measurement tool used to assess and communicate the level of air pollution in a specific area. It provides information about the quality of the air we breathe and helps individuals and communities make informed decisions to protect their health.

The AQI categorizes air quality levels into six different categories, each representing a specific range of pollutant concentrations. These categories are:

  • Good: The air quality is considered satisfactory, and the risk to human health is minimal. This category is represented by a green color code on the AQI scale.
  • Moderate: The air quality is acceptable, but there may be a moderate health concern for a small number of individuals, particularly those who are sensitive to air pollution. This category is represented by a yellow color code.
  • Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups: The air quality is considered unhealthy for individuals who are more vulnerable to the effects of air pollution, such as children, older adults, and people with respiratory or cardiovascular conditions. This category is represented by an orange color code.
  • Unhealthy: The air quality is deemed unhealthy for everyone, and there may be adverse health effects for the general population. This category is represented by a red color code.
  • Very Unhealthy: The air quality is very poor, and there is a significant risk to health. This category is represented by a purple color code.
  • Hazardous: The air quality is extremely dangerous, and immediate action is required to protect health. This category is represented by a maroon color code.

By categorizing air quality levels, the AQI helps individuals and authorities understand the severity of air pollution and take appropriate measures to mitigate its impact. It serves as a valuable tool in promoting sustainable development by raising awareness about the importance of clean air and encouraging actions to reduce pollution levels.
