The Week in Review: GOP Gubernatorial Candidates Debate Violence, Guns
The Week in Review: GOP Gubernatorial Candidates Debate Violence, Guns-March 2024
Mar 15, 2026 8:14 PM

The Republican gubernatorial candidates faced-off for the first time and Darren Bailey doubled down and called Chicago a hellhole again.

Violence dominates the debate for all candidates, but all dance around the gun control issue.

Two more candidates jump into Chicago’s mayoral race. Both Roderick Sawyer and Paul Vallas said Mayor Lori Lightfoot can’t handle the violence crisis. She called them misogynistic.

Another candidate, Kam Buckner, offered up his own anti-violence blueprint right after another violent Memorial Day weekend.

Philanthropist Willie Wilson and Ald. Ray Lopez have also declared their candidacies and former Gov. Pat Quinn may jump in, too.

Finally, four-term Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart was a no-show at a debate while he continues to try to knock off opponents.
