Speechwriters Analyze GOP Talking Points at Republican Convention
Speechwriters Analyze GOP Talking Points at Republican Convention-April 2024
Apr 24, 2026 1:46 PM

As the nation grapples with a devastating hurricane, civil unrest and COVID-19, President Donald Trump will accept his party’s nomination for president Thursday evening at the White House, marking the finale of the Republican National Convention.

Speaking at the convention Wednesday, Vice President Mike Pence highlighted the party’s law-and-order message while referencing violent demonstrations throughout the country.

“President Trump and I will always support the right of Americans to peaceful protest,” Pence said. “But rioting and looting is not peaceful protest. Tearing down statues is not free speech and those who do so will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”

Robert Lehrman, the former White House speechwriter for Vice President Al Gore, said Trump should use the public speaking techniques of repetition and emphasis to drive his points home.

“If he has the good writers writing for him, he’ll be stinging and have some memorable lines and close inspiringly,” he said.

Lehrman joins “Chicago Tonight” to discuss the RNC speeches along with Mary Kate Cary, who served as White House speechwriter for President George H.W. Bush.
