Chicagoans woke up Wednesday morning to a covering of snow outside, doubled-checked their calendars to confirm that the date was in fact April 15, and shrugged their shoulders because, yeah, this cruel trick of weather feels about right for 2020.

A spring dusting of white stuff actually isn’t all that unusual for the city. Just last year, a storm dumped 5.3 inches of snow on Chicago in mid-April, an amount that came oh so close to setting a spring record, according to the National Weather Service.

Snow in May isn’t unheard of either, with 1.3 inches measured on May 3, 1907. The absolute latest in the year that so much as a trace of snow was documented came on June 2, 1910. That’s one record we don’t want to break.
