In the past three weeks, Hurricanes Eta and Iota landed a double blow on Central American countries.

Hurricane Eta made landfall on Nov. 3 in Nicaragua as a Category 4 storm. Just 13 days later, a second Category 4 storm named Hurricane Iota followed Eta. Now, resultant landslides, flooding and power outages have left hundreds of thousands of Nicaraguans, Guatemalans and Hondurans displaced.

Gonzalo Chavez, consulate general of Honduras, says the situation is dire.

“People are left without anything – no housing, no food, no clothing, anything. So we’re making a plea for help for the people because the disaster is apocalyptical,” he said.

Local event

Local community organization Rincon Family Services is hosting a hurricane relief donation event from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Friday through Monday at 3710 N.
