How New Delegates are Celebrating the Virtual Democratic National Convention
How New Delegates are Celebrating the Virtual Democratic National Convention-July 2024
Jul 30, 2026 10:26 PM

People across the country are witnessing a historic Democratic National Convention this week.

The catch is, it’s behind their TV and computer screens.

Conventions of the past have been known for their fanfare, including parties and large rallies, so this year makes for an unconventional convention for everyone, especially those who are first-time delegates.

But at least two delegates are making the most of this week’s gathering.

One is Melissa Conyears-Ervin, the Chicago city treasurer and delegate for Joe Biden.

“To be able to nominate the first Black women for the vice presidential nominee for the Democratic party. To do that in the same room with my daughter, a young Black girl, I think about that, and I tell you, for me that moment is priceless,” she said.

For Krystal Garcia Centeno, a member of the Progressive Turnout Project and a Bernie Sanders delegate, the event makes her think of family. Her mom has been with her for other historic events, like the inauguration of President Barack Obama. Now, she gets to watch this moment unfold with her mom and her younger siblings.
