Definition: Basil is a popular herb in the mint family (Lamiaceae) that is widely used in culinary applications for its aromatic leaves. It is native to tropical regions of Asia and is cultivated for both its culinary and medicinal properties.

Lemonade Recipe: Refreshing Basil Lemonade

Ingredients:

1 cup fresh basil leaves, washed
4-5 lemons, juiced
1/2 cup granulated sugar
4 cups cold water
Ice cubes

Instructions:

In a small saucepan, combine the sugar and 1 cup of water. Heat over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the sugar dissolves completely. Remove from heat and let the syrup cool.

In a blender or food processor, add the basil leaves and 1 cup of cold water. Blend until the basil is finely chopped.

Strain the basil mixture through a fine-mesh sieve or cheesecloth, collecting the liquid in a pitcher.

Add the lemon juice, cooled sugar syrup, and remaining 2 cups of cold water to the pitcher. Stir well to combine.

Refrigerate the basil lemonade for at least 1 hour to allow the flavors to meld.

When ready to serve, fill glasses with ice cubes and pour the basil lemonade over the ice.

Garnish with fresh basil leaves or lemon slices, if desired.
